Case-based Reasoning Systems for Knowledge Mediation

A knowledge mediation system eases the transfer of knowledge between two communities of practice. We describe one such system, based upon case-based reasoning, which reuses cases representing previous instances of mediation between two different communities. The system’s specific purpose is to support management processes to plan the maintenance and operation of a utility distribution network, by mediating knowledge from the conceptual world of engineers in the business. This paper focuses on two particular issues. The first is the means by which a case is represented so that it characterises an instance of translation between the two conceptual worlds and the second concerns the mechanisms in the system for adapting the previous case to the current problem.
